| Only a few decades ago, the traditional "American family" clearly delineated a heterosexual couple together with children. However, today in the United States, while there are still numerous examples of the traditional family unit, there are also many alternative families emerging. It is not a common practice for an "American family" to incorporate step-children, half-children, or homosexual parents. With the increase in divorce rates, there are many single parent families; additionally, there is an increase in the number of women and men who choose to build their own "American family" by having children outside their wedlock. It is important to realize that the diversity of this society is what makes America so unique. Because the United States is a heaven for new immigrants, an "American Family" may speak any language spoken in the world and may ascribe to any religion, or religious beliefs. They may work in any type of profession ranging from a farmer to a doctor. Additionally, because the United States is so large, an "American family" may vary from city to state, or state to region. A family living in Sacramento, California is likely to be different than one from Manhattan, New York or one from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In fact, this difference might be so stark that the only thing these families share is their country of residency. "American family" is also a popular name used for businesses, probably because consumers appeal to the American name. One major company with this name is an insurance company that has offices throughout the country. |
